Why Archetypes?
I first became fascinated by archetypes for singers when I saw them in a great resource by Alex over at The Awakened Creative. He was using Jung’s archetypes in his branding courses to help artists tell clearer, more emotionally resonant stories about who they are and how they want people to feel when they interact with them. They immediately gave me more clarity about my own artistic identity.
Every artist contains multitudes, but when we try to squeeze too many parts of ourselves into one show, it feels messy and confusing. Like good writing, we have to narrow the focus, and then narrow again. Archetypes help us do that by clarifying the kind of experience we want to create.
The System
As you’ll see below, I’ve built on Jung’s archetypes and incorporated others from fiction, mythology, and popular music history. I’ve also added examples of what you might see, hear, or feel with each archetype, but none of this is fixed. They’re called archetypes for a reason. They hold truth while staying flexible and imaginative.
What I’ve provided here is a simplified summary. (If you’d like a more detailed booklet, click here.)
I recommend choosing one primary archetype as your foundation. If you feel pulled toward one or two others, blend in some secondary elements. If you feel equally drawn to four or more, consider creating separate archetype blends for different projects.
Think of a great dish: one hero flavor, with an accent or two. Add too many flavors, and the featured ones start to lose their character and potency. It’s not impossible to put everything in one dish, but it’s harder to let each ingredient shine.
Try them on. Blend them. Play with them. Switch them up.
Eventually, you may outgrow certain archetypes or invent new ones. If you do, I’d love to hear what you discover.

Using Archetypes with My Developing Artists
Right now, I’m in the middle of an ongoing experiment with my students to see whether this framework can support creative identity and performance design the way it helped me.
Using archetypes is currently helping students who…
Want to “be themselves” on stage but aren’t sure what that actually means
Love so many songs that narrowing down a setlist feels impossible
Want to show everything they can do in one gig
Believe they shouldn’t need a label to be a successful artist
Think labels are too limiting
Are realizing that audiences (beyond their inner circle) don’t buy tickets to make the artist feel good. They come to have their own experience.
Together, we’re learning how archetypes can turn “being yourself” from a vague idea into something you can actually practice. They’re helping us make artistic choices with purpose instead of paralysis. And perhaps most importantly, they’re reminding us that authenticity on stage isn’t about revealing everything. It’s about revealing the right things, on purpose.
I think of this framework as a conversation more than a system. Every time someone tries these archetypes, they teach me something new about artistry, identity, and the space between them.
If you explore them in your own work, I’d love to hear what you discover: which ones resonate, which ones surprise you, and what new archetypes you invent along the way.
After all, the goal isn’t to fit neatly into a category. It’s to understand the energies you’re already carrying, and to share them with intention, on purpose, and in full color.
